Small Space? Don't Make These Common Furniture Mistakes

It may seem like a good idea to pick furniture pieces that are small when you move into a smaller home or apartment. But that isn’t always the case. In fact, sometimes small furniture can make your rooms look that much smaller.

Consider the following small space furniture mistakes to help keep you from making the same ones in your own new space.

Don’t go too small with your couch
The average sofa has a lifespan of up to 15 years. Unless you recently bought a home that’s on the small side, 15 years is a long time to stay in a small apartment.

You won’t always live in the same small space, so don’t choose a small couch because your space happens to be small too. What’s more, a tiny couch in a tiny space may only make your room look smaller.

A full-sized couch from a boutique furniture store can make your room look bigger. It can help draw your eye through the space. And, as long as you’re smart about what to place on the other side of the couch, you can make sure the space feels balanced.

Don’t include additional seating if there’s no room
You’ll see many examples of accent chairs on the other side of a couch. These chairs are the seats for your guests to sit in when they come over.

But not every home or apartment has a living room large enough for these chairs. And when you attempt to squish them into the space, they look… well, squished.

Instead of insisting on accent chairs, try using only one chair or a pouf. You can also substitute the need for accent chairs altogether by using a sectional couch. Sectional couches give your small space a full-sized couch and additional seating all in one.

If you can’t see a sectional in your future and you’re stumped about extra seating, consider using a bench. A bench that has a cushioned top can double as seating and a coffee table so you don’t have to choose which one to have.
